Forgotten Christmas Movies

Sure, Christmas is  over and most of us are thinking about 2012 right now, but I’ve been dying to highlight Christmas movies that are rarely enjoyed during the holiday season anymore.

Christopher the Christmas Tree

Christopher and Hootie

Sure, the story has been done a million times: the little guy never gives up on his dream and eventually achieves his goal and is admired be all. Still, you can’t miss out on Christopher the Christmas tree, the story of a little tree who dreams of being chosen for Christmas but is much too small. Eventually, Christopher is no longer too small to become a Christmas tree, but instead becomes too big! Meanwhile, the adorable Hootie the Owl is treated badly by his family because he doesn’t know how to talk, read, or fly. He runs away and is found by a kind little boy and his family. Eventually, Hootie meets Christopher and the two become good friends. Will Christopher ever become a Christmas tree? Will Hootie ever learn how to talk and fly? Well, I’m pretty sure you’ve guessed the answer by now, but this forgotten Christmas short still isn’t one to miss out on next holiday season! You can find the entire movie throughout four YouTube videos, but it’s the later version that was edited slightly. It’s still good, though!

The Life and Aventures of Santa Claus

Two of the immortal characters from the Life and Adventures of Santa Claus

Everyone watches Santa Claus is Coming to Town, but some people don’t know that Rankin/Bass also made another Christmas movie illustrating Santa’s life before he was, well, Santa. The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus, sometimes called the Life and Times of Santa Claus, might remind you of The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings, only it’s Christmas-y. It’s the tale of how Santa Claus decided to give toys to children and why he is immortal. It also includes adventure and mystery and an epic battle of good vs. evil! Unfortunately, they don’t have the entire movie of this on YouTube, but around the holidays they’ll normally put it on really early in the morning so that no one will ever know it’s actually on.

Annabelle’s Wish

Annabelle and Billy

Annabelle’s Wish tells the story of a baby cow named Annabelle who wants to learn how to fly, just like one of Santa’s reindeer. Every Christmas, Santa Claus visits the barn and allows the animals  to have the ability to speak for one day. Annabelle wanted to ask Santa if she could let him be a reindeer, too, but he leaves before she can ask him. Annabelle soon meets a boy named Billy who lost his voice, and the two become best friends. But Billy’s cruel Aunt Agnes wants  Billy to live with her instead of with his kind grandpa, and Billy might be taken away unless he learns how to talk! Meanwhile, Annabelle has been waiting for Santa all year, hoping that she might have her one wish granted. This story can be found on YouTube and is so touching it might bring a tear to your eye. Too bad they never put it on TV anymore!

 Frosty’s Winter Wonderland

Frosty and Crystal get married

Everybody knows about Frosty the Snowman, but a lot of people think that it’s sequal is the dissapointing Frosty Returns. In actuality, the REAL sequal to Frosty is Frosty’s Winter Wonderland, when Frosty meets his wife, Crystal, who can also talk! They’re excited to get married, but Jack Frost is jealous of Frosty because all the kids love playing with him, and not Jack Frost. He plots to steal Frosty’s hat so that he’ll never be “all livin’” again! In this true sequal to the original Frosty, you’ll enjoy seeing Frosty and the the kids again and you’ll also meet his future Snow-Wife and the Snow-Parson. After watching Frosty’s Winter Wonderland, you’ll never go back to Frosty Returns again!

The Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold

Two Leprechauns from The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold

How Rankin/Bass EVER thought of connecting Leprechauns and banshees to Christmas is beyond me, but somehow The Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold manages to be a good, yet forgotten by some, Christmas classic. This Christmas short can be found on YouTube and includes colorful characters and catchy songs.
